PAST PERFORMANCES

WESTERKAMP at NEW WORKS CALGARY

New Works Calgary presents THE LAND/THE STORIES, Friday, March 25, 8pm at the Eckhardt-Grammaté Hall (Rozsa Centre, University of Calgary).

Soprano Sophie Bouffard and pianist Jamie Syer will perform a programme of music linked to Canadian myths, story and history. The concert will feature two premieres: a song cycle by Manitoba composer William Pura, with texts from the writings of Louis Riel; and a new work from Regina-based composer Alain Perron.

The Canadian theme is explored in Monte Pishny-Floyd’s “Far From Bila Hora” which depicts the experience of early immigrants to the Prairies; Robert Fleming’s “Three Folk Lullabies” are selected from different backgrounds: an Appalachian folk song, a French-Canadian folk song, as well as a Canadian Eskimo song; and “Like a Memory” by Hildegard Westerkamp, incorporates sonic samples collected from sites in B.C.’s Slocan Valley: the sounds of old iron, decaying mining equipment, and an abandoned piano in a decrepit log cabin....

Westerkamp CD travels Into India

CD Launch of Hildegard Westerkamp's Into India: a composer's journey
Friday, November 1, 8pm
Western Front, 303 E8th Ave, Vancouver
Tickets: $15 /$10 (includes a copy of the CD)

Internationally renowned soundscape composer Hildegard Westerkamp launches her latest CD Into India: a composer's journey on the earsay label Friday, November 1st at the Western Front. This exciting evening features a mixture of sight, sound, smell and taste:

  • the world premiere of her meditative Attending to Sacred Matters (from the CD)
  • images from Westerkamp's journeys in India,
  • taste treats from Nirvana
  • James Hamilton's live sitar.

The highly anticipated Into India project was developed over a ten year period. "All sounds for these compositions," Westerkamp explains, "were recorded during my travels in India in the 1990's. They form the language with which I speak‚ of a relationship, of a love, that I developed for this initially very foreign place."

Exploring the contrasts and intensity which India presents to the visitor, "the relentless confrontation... the extremes between beauty and filth, glittering wealth and devastating poverty," Into India reveals Westerkamp at the height of her compositional and philosophical powers. These works have captured "the extraordinary intensity of daily living on the one hand and the inner radiance, focus, and stillness on the other hand that emanate from deep within the culture and its people..."

Works by Bürck, Westerkamp and Oliver performed on all night concert in France.

July 20, 2002, Besançon. 11 hours of music for people lying in beds presented by elektrophonie.
